The Faculty of Arts at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s oldest institution for teaching and research in the humanities, and the largest in terms of the structure and range of disciplines.
The University of Helsinki Humanities Programme for visiting professors and postdocs aims at establishing collaboration with the world’s leading researchers, expanding research cooperation networks, creating new research openings, and producing co-authored articles for top-level journals. The programme will bolster the international dimension of the University’s research environment.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS (5-10)
for a fixed term from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2020, to work in the University of Helsinki Humanities Programme. The successful candidates’ research projects within the programme will focus either on environmental studies in the humanities or on indigenous languages and cultures. The postdoctoral researchers to be appointed will have proven expertise in one of these areas. Their main duties will include full-time research in their respective fields. The post will require both independent and collaborative scientific publishing.

An appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research, and possess the teaching skills required for the position. The candidate should have a proven capability to publish in scientific journals, have excellent analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary scientific community. The successful candidates are expected to have excellent skills in written and oral English.

The postdoctoral researchers to be appointed should have obtained their doctoral degree within the last five years.

The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart or teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The salary is EUR 3,300-4,000 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.

(3) A research statement (max. 2000 words) consisting of
i) a brief description of previous research experience
ii) a proposal for the research project that the applicant wants to conduct in the University of Helsinki Humanities Programme
iii) a brief description of the plans for scientific cooperation with the staff of the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Arts.
